Are you a fair person? Have you ever been accused of being a sexist, giving men more rights than women? In order to find out the answer, just think of the following: is there any difference between a man and a woman’s infidelities?
There are people, who come from various ethnic and cultural groups, who regard extra-marital sex as a man’s right. Infidelity, to them, is accepted as a male behavior while woman are prohibited to follow those same standards.
Just think of the Kennedys who represent that thought. Throughout their family generations, men were the ones who had affairs while their women always had to “stand by their men”. Before the implementations of sexual harassment laws, men thought they had the right to fool around in the office and even hire women at conventions.
It is not strange, then, that many men try to downsize the impact of their affairs by saying, “it didn’t mean a thing”. If one their wives would ask about her husband’s reaction if he were in her shoes, he would quickly answer “I’d kill you right away. But you are not like this. You’ll never do such a thing”.
This double-standard behavior can be attributed to the fact that to women, sexual relationships usually involve emotional attachment unlike the men whose affairs can depend on sex more than love. This is why many wives might forgive their husbands for one-night stands but it would be much more difficult to do the same in regards to prolonged affairs that include romanticism. Thus, to men, a wife’s affair is more threatening to the family because of the emotional involvement.
What about you? Do you also have those double-standards in regards to infidelity?
