To salvage your marriage after an affair is not an easy thing to do. However, if you are intent on saving your marriage, then there are major steps to be followed by both parties of a marriage. Just remember: some marriages end up stronger after an affair, for both spouses are confronted with their need to share responsibility.

Tips to the unfaithful:
- Be extremely honest about your affair.
- Give many details, especially the reason behind your infidelity, for this will lessen the imaginations of more horrible things than what really happened.
- You might want to go to a family therapist or counselor if you cannot unravel your information by yourself.
- Address the vulnerabilities in your marriage by getting self-reflective. Understanding what went wrong will help you to prevent its reoccurrence.
- You have to be really remorseful and trustworthy.
- Respect your spouse’s need for reassurance and be patient.

Tips to the betrayed:
- Express and demand what should be done to save the marriage from your unfaithful spouse.
- Spend more time together to regain the emotions and trust. You can go to the restaurants, movies, concerts or even for a walk together.
- Try to forgive even though you will never forget totally. Forgiveness is not just for the sake of your spouse, it is for you, for it will help you to “move on”.

If you and your spouse have passed through a painful experience of infidelity, have decided to save your marriage and go on, you should start thinking of what to do after going through this trauma. Your first focus should be finding the reasons that led to infidelity in the first place.

A major obstacle that will hinder you will be emotions, for the cheated spouse usually suffers and have mixed feelings of fear, anger and hurt. The cheating spouse, on the other hand, usually suffers from mixed feelings towards two people. Thus, both spouses wrongly start focusing on the past and/ or the future, momentarily forgetting that they should be focusing on the present in stead.

This is probably a difficult time to be objective, but evaluation of the experience is crucial to their saving their relationship. Infidelity means there is a point of weakness in the marriage that has to be fixed.

Just remember that voicing dissatisfaction with the marriage is not always bad. Infidelity occurs when couples can no more communicate their dissatisfaction with their relationship, tending to fight or alienate each other. Remember, marriage is about “speaking” with each other.

One of the worst things that can happen to a marriage is infidelity. It plants mistrust, insecurity and destroys previous trust.

Although there are statistics regarding marriage and divorce, there are no accurate numbers regarding infidelity, for not all individuals report their affairs when a survey is conducted. Some researchers claim that nearly 40% of wives and 60% of husbands in the USA will have an affair at one point of their marriage life. However, less than 10% of those cases marry their extramarital partner after divorce.

But infidelity is not the end of the road and sometimes such a wound can heal slowly; it is a treatable crisis (says William Doherty, professor and author on the subject of infidelity). Thus, no matter how bad things are after infidelity, if both partners want to save their marriage, they will succeed.

The important thing to know about healing after infidelity is that it takes a very long time, even years in some of the cases. You have to be patient to be able to overcome the disillusionment and disappointment. You will probably have to start from “square one”.
